A Rapturously Happy God

“…which God will bring about in his own time—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.”
1 Timothy 6:15–16
In today’s Scripture, Paul takes a moment to express awe and wonder about his God. He calls Him, “God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light.”
To be blessed is to be happy. Some scholars use the word blissful here for blessed. God is joyous and radiant. He is not a threatened, pacing deity starved for attention. He is not easily angered, touchy, or out of sorts on bad days. He isn’t biting His nails or blowing His stack when the world goes awry. No, He is the exultant and rapturously happy God. And that is good.
People in distress need to reach out and find a strong, secure, and happy anchor. As my friend Steve Estes says, “Nothing we do can disturb the blessedness of God. We will always find Him full of compassion and tender mercies.”
Lord, there is so much unhappiness in our world. So much disappointment and bitterness, so many broken dreams. Please carry me along on the overflow of Your joy today. May I see myself as blessed, happy, and contented in You. Let me show through my life how wonderful it is to have a joyful anchor and foundation in You.
