The Woman Who Anointed Jesus

Mark 14:3-9

“She did what she could.”

Mark 14:8

Few phrases capture faithful living more beautifully than these simple words from Jesus: “She did what she could.” We do not know her name. But we do know she did what she could.

While Jesus was dining in Bethany, a woman entered carrying an alabaster jar filled with expensive perfume. Without hesitation, she broke the jar and poured the perfume over His head.

The room immediately filled with criticism.

Some of those present were outraged. They estimated the perfume’s value and concluded it had been wasted. In their minds, there were more practical uses for such an expensive gift.

Jesus saw something entirely different.

He saw love. He saw worship. He saw faith.

The woman understood what others were missing. While many still struggled to grasp what Jesus had been teaching about His coming death, she responded with wholehearted devotion. Her gift was costly because her gratitude was deep.

What stands out is that she did not wait until she could do more. She simply did what she could.

Many believers spend too much time comparing themselves to others. Someone else has more resources, more influence, more opportunities, and more abilities.

Jesus never asks us to give what we do not have. He invites us to offer faithfully what we do have.

For some, that may be financial generosity. For others, it may be hospitality, encouragement, service, prayer, or compassion. The specific gift matters less than the heart behind it.

The woman poured out her treasure because she believed Jesus was worthy of her very best.

She didn’t wait until she could do more. She gave her best now. Jesus called it beautiful.
