The Widow’s Two Coins

Mark 12:41–44

“She, out of her poverty, put in everything.”

Jesus was watching people give.

As worshipers entered the temple courts, many placed offerings in the collection boxes. Some gave large amounts, and their gifts undoubtedly drew attention (they made sure of that). Yet Jesus’s eyes settled on someone most people overlooked.

A poor widow approached and dropped in two small copper coins, worth almost nothing by earthly standards.

Then Jesus made a startling statement. “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others.”

How could that be? Others had given much larger gifts. The difference was not the amount but the sacrifice. The wealthy contributors gave from their surplus. The widow gave from her need. They gave what they would not miss. She entrusted to God what she could not afford to lose.

Jesus measures generosity differently than we do. We tend to focus on size. He focuses on trust.

For the widow, those two coins represented more than money. They represented dependence. By giving them, she placed herself completely in God’s hands.

Many followers of Christ know what that feels like. Sometimes faith requires us to release what feels essential, even when time is already scarce, energy is already stretched, and resources already seem limited. Yet God sees every act of sacrificial generosity.

The widow never performed a miracle, preached a sermon, or led a nation. But Jesus made sure her story would be remembered wherever Mark’s Gospel is shared.

Her gift reminds us that God’s way works differently from ours. We focus on what we give. He notices what we keep.

Jesus wasn’t watching what people gave. He was watching what people kept.
