The Servant of Abraham 

Genesis 24:1–27 

“Praise be to the Lord… who has not abandoned His kindness and faithfulness.”

Some assignments seem impossible from the start. 

Abraham’s servant received one of those assignments. Abraham was advanced in age, and Isaac remained unmarried. The servant was entrusted with the responsibility of traveling hundreds of miles to find a wife for Isaac among Abraham’s distant relatives. There were no maps, no cell phones, and no guarantees of success. The future of God’s covenant family seemed to rest, in part, on the outcome of this journey. 

What makes this servant remarkable is not merely that he accepted the assignment. It is how he carried it out. Upon arriving at his destination, his first response was prayer. Standing beside a well, he asked God for specific guidance. Then he waited and watched. 

Soon, Rebekah arrived. She not only offered him a drink but also volunteered to draw water for all his camels. It was exactly the sign he had prayed for. 

The servant’s response is one of the story’s most beautiful moments. Before completing the mission, before celebrating success, and before returning home, he stopped to worship. He recognized that God had been guiding his every step. 

Many of us spend a great deal of time asking God to direct our paths. This servant shows us what that looks like in practice. He prayed, acted, paid attention, and trusted God to open the right doors. 

Faith is not passive. It moves forward, fully depending on the Holy Spirit’s guidance. 

The servant’s name is never mentioned, yet his faithfulness helped advance God’s redemptive plan. Through Isaac and Rebekah would come Jacob, the nation of Israel, and ultimately the Messiah. 

He prayed before he acted, watched while he waited, and worshiped before he celebrated. That is what it looks like to walk with God.
