The Royal Official

John 4:46–54 

“The man took Jesus at His word and departed.”

Parents know the helpless feeling that comes when their child is suffering, and there is nothing they can do to fix it. 

A royal official in Capernaum found himself in that situation. His son was seriously ill and near death. Upon hearing that Jesus had arrived in Cana, he traveled more than twenty miles to find Him. Desperation drove him to Jesus, but faith would be required to leave Him. 

When the official pleaded with Jesus to come and heal his son, Jesus responded in an unexpected way. He did not accompany the man home. Instead, He simply said, “Go, your son will live.” 

At that moment, the official faced a choice. He could insist on more proof. He could demand that Jesus accompany him. Or he could trust the Word of Christ. 

Scripture records one of the simplest yet most profound statements of faith in the Gospels: “The man took Jesus at His word and departed.” 

Nothing had visibly changed. His son was still miles away, and there was no evidence of a miracle. Yet he obeyed. He turned around and began the long journey home, trusting only the promise of Jesus. 

Along the way, servants met him with astonishing news. His son was alive and recovering. When he asked when the improvement began, he learned it had occurred at the very moment Jesus spoke those words, “Go, your son will live.” 

Most of us would prefer sight before obedience. We want confirmation before committing. Yet faith, often, works in the opposite direction. God invites us to trust His Word before we see the outcome. 

The official discovered that Jesus’s promises are trustworthy, even when evidence is not yet visible. 

He turned and walked twenty miles home on nothing but a promise. That walk is called faith.
