I AM

A serene night scene featuring a single tree reflected perfectly in a still body of water under a starry sky

“When Jesus said, ‘I AM He,’ they drew back and fell to the ground.”

John 18:6

The scene unfolds in the Garden of Gethsemane. Torches flicker in the darkness. Soldiers arrive, weapons drawn. Jesus does not hide or retreat. He steps forward and asks who they are seeking.

When they answer, Jesus speaks two simple words in the original text. “I AM.” At that moment, the guards draw back and fall to the ground. They are not responding to force or threat but to the sovereign, divine authority revealed in who Jesus is as He names Himself. His identity alone carries power, and they instinctively know it.

This moment pulls back the curtain. The One being arrested is not a victim caught off guard. He is sovereign, knowing exactly what is happening and why it must happen.

Jesus does not say “I AM” to escape suffering. He says it to reveal who He is. The eternal God stands calmly in the garden, choosing obedience for His Father’s glory. Love, not weakness, leads Him toward the cross.

Throughout this Sunday devotional series on the “I AM” claims of Jesus, our Lord has revealed Himself in many ways. He has met our hunger, darkness, fear, sin, grief, pride, and confusion. Each “I AM” has pointed to the same truth. God has come near in Christ.

Now, in the garden, all those claims stand together. The same voice that spoke with authority now chooses surrender. The power He embodied, which causes soldiers to fall, is the same power that allows Him to be bound.

For those who feel powerless, this scene offers deep assurance. Jesus is never overpowered. He lays down His life willingly. No one takes it from Him.

The arrest that follows is not a loss of authority. It is the exercise of it. Jesus allows Himself to be bound so that others may be set free.

Even in sovereign surrender, Jesus remains the great I AM.
