The Power of God

“…We preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.”

1 Corinthians 1:23-24

People say, “Joni, I really admire your strength.” I thank them, but then I respectfully disagree. Look, if I’m strong in anything…it’s in knowing how weak I am. My disability is a daily reminder of how needy I am. But that’s not bad!  And here’s why:  First Corinthians 1, verse 24 describes the cross as the “power of God.”

And your weakness – that is, your “I can’t do this” – that kind of weakness is the key to receiving God’s power. And it all happens at the cross. There, in exchange; a transaction occurs. You confess sin; and God imparts forgiveness; you confess your poverty; he bestows riches. You humble yourself before the Lord; and he lifts you up. You yield your weakness; and he gives you strength. Those are just a few ways the cross is the power of God.
