The ABCs of Christmas

This poem uses the alphabet to reveal the reasons we celebrate Christmas.

I’m Joni Eareckson Tada and it’s time for Joni and Friends.

It came upon the midnight clear:
That glorious song of old,
From angels bending near the earth,
To touch their harps of gold;
“Peace on the earth, good will to men,
All heavenly angels sing,
The world in solemn stillness lay,
To hear the angels sing.

I was singing this beautiful Christmas carol just this morning after someone sent me a Christmas poem. I sure do wish I knew who wrote it, but all I know is that it’s called “The ABCs of Christmas.” This is how it goes: It starts off with A; angels from the realms of glory telling of the Christmas story. Then B stands for Bethlehem that beckons with joyful accord; come here and see and worship the Lord. Speaking of C, C stands for Christ who was born on Christmas Day, asleep in a manger, a bed made of hay.

D stands for divine and holy is His birth; angels give flight over all the earth. E is for Everlasting Father, Lord of all, look with mercy and love on us all. F is for fear not said the angel long ago; I bring good tidings to earth below. G stands for glory to the Son, we sing; Christ is our prophet, our priest and our King. H is for heavenly hosts; their watch keeping over the child so sweetly sleeping. The letter I, well, that stands for Immanuel, we sing thy praise; thou prince of life, thou fount of grace. “Joy to the world” – the Lord is come; born in a manger, God’s only son. K is for King that the prophets foretold, and now all men His love behold.

Well, I could go on with the alphabet, but I think you get the point behind the poem; it’s just a fun Christmasy little thing to read to your children, or your grandchildren, at nighttime. And I found myself singing more than a couple of Christmas carols by the time I finish my Christmas ABC’s. Actually, it is a wonderful way to focus your thoughts on just why we celebrate Christmas, maybe something to read around the holiday dinner table after you’ve had dessert. Hey, I would love to send you a copy of these ABC’s – we’ve printed it all out nice and fancy on holiday paper and will get it off to you in time for you to share it with the children or your grandchildren. Just call us or write us, or you can download a copy of the poem by visiting joniradio.org. It’s the Christmas ABCs, with Jesus at the center of it all.

And once again let me remind you of our website – come by and visit us at any time – it’s joniradio.org. Of course you can always call and talk with one of our team members by dialing 1-888-522-5664. God’s blessing on you until next time when we get together for Joni and Friends.
