I’m alone, yet not alone, God’s lighting lamp will guide me home.
With His love and tenderness leading through the wilderness
And wherever I may roam I’m alone, yet not alone.

Hi, I’m Joni, and maybe a few years ago, you remember me singing this song? It was back in 2014 and it was one of the nominations in the Best Song category at the Academy Awards. “Alone Yet Not Alone” was the theme song for the movie of the same name. It was a true story about a young pioneer family whose children were abducted by Indians. They were thought to be lost forever until, one day, this simple song reunited them with their family. It’s a story filled with tragedy and heartbreak, but also triumph as these children struggle to find their way out of captivity and back into the arms of their loved ones. It’s a wonderful Christian film the whole family would love.

And when the producers of this Christian movie asked me to sing the lead song, I was stunned. I’m not a trained vocalist, but they insisted. And so my husband Ken took me to a little recording studio in Santa Monica, California where I did my best to hit the high notes, and I think I did an okay job. In fact, a few of those notes were so high Ken had to gently push on my abdomen to help me get enough breath to sustain those notes, but the final recording was beautiful. And you heard just a little of it a moment ago. This song, “Alone Yet Not Alone,”is a key element in reuniting those pioneer children with their families, and you’ll have to see the film to understand how the song fits. And guess what? You can see it!
