Using God’s Name With Care
Hi, I’m Joni, and I received a text from a Christian friend the other day, all excited about a dinner party she went to. She was talking about the banquet center and she texted me “OMG, it was so cool!” In other words, she was texting, “Oh, my God, it was so cool.” Now, some might say I’m old-fashioned, but it hurts my spirit when I hear brothers and sisters in Christ use God’s name carelessly or flippantly. The name of God means Elohim and that’s pretty precious. David laments in Psalm 139:20, “[O Lord], Your adversaries misuse Your name.” Look, no Christian wants to be God’s adversary, so let’s not buy into the ways of our culture, using popular idioms that everybody else uses. Others may, but you should not. Do not use the Lord’s name in vain, the Bible says. So, resist the cultural trend. Train yourself to use God’s name carefully and worshipfully.
