Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada Many Christians make a distinction between happiness and joyHappiness, they say, depends on what’s happening, and itll change depending on the circumstancesOn the other hand, joy does not changeIt’s rock-solidit’s unshakableBut, is there a difference? In Scripture, God does not do any hairsplitting between termsPsalm 68 says, “May the righteous be glad and rejoice before God; may they be happy and joyful.” Oh, friend, when it comes to joy and happiness, God does not do a big linguistic distinctionHappiness is not the emotion of fleshly-minded sinners, while joy is the expression of heaven-bound saintsFor instance, when you’re glad, you’re not thinking, “Hmm, now, is this the joy of the Lord, or am I just plain happy?” Listen, all gladness finds its root in God. Every smile is a giftSo, be happy; be joyfulBecause it’s all from the Lord.
