Second-Nature Gratitude
Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. Many Christians make a distinction between happiness and joy. Happiness, they say, depends on what’s happening, and it’ll change depending on the circumstances. On the other hand, joy does not change. It’s rock-solid; it’s unshakable. But, is there a difference? In Scripture, God does not do any hairsplitting between terms. Psalm 68 says, “May the righteous be glad and rejoice before God; may they be happy and joyful.” Oh, friend, when it comes to joy and happiness, God does not do a big linguistic distinction. Happiness is not the emotion of fleshly-minded sinners, while joy is the expression of heaven-bound saints. For instance, when you’re glad, you’re not thinking, “Hmm, now, is this the joy of the Lord, or am I just plain happy?” Listen, all gladness finds its root in God. Every smile is a gift. So, be happy; be joyful. Because it’s all from the Lord.
