Misuse Of God’s Name
Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada, and not long ago at a dinner party, I heard one of my co–workers say under her breath to a friend, “God, I can’t believe what my husband did the other day!” And, I had to wheel up, quietly pull her aside, and say, “Look, I know you mean well; I know you love the Lord and would never want to disparage Him; but when you loosely throw around the word “God,” it is disparaging. ‘Cause there’s only one God, and He’s the God of the Bible. And it’s His name we’re disrespecting, so please, bring it up a level, would you?” I know she felt embarrassed; probably even ashamed. But I’ve heard too many Christians use God’s name that way. David says in Psalm 139: 20, “… your adversaries [O Lord] misuse your name.” Look, no Christian wants to be an adversary of God, so train yourself to use His name carefully and worshipfully. I’m Joni Eareckson Tada.
