Frivolous Talk
Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada, and recently I was at a restaurant with friends, and we all ordered really fattening desserts. And that sparked a fat joke, and then another, and that’s when I piped up, “Okay, enough already! No more jokes! Let’s be thankful to even have dessert.” And so, our talk then quickly turned to positive things. You know, Ephesians 5 verse 4 says, “Let there be no … silly talk, nor levity which is not fitting, but instead let there be thanksgiving.” Oh, friend, how can we guard ourselves against jokes and stories that are not fitting? How do we guard against critical or sarcastic or disrespectful words? How can we put the brakes on conversations that are silly and petty? The answer is – step in with thankful words. So, remember that when you’re in a group of people. Be the first to speak positive words that reflect a grateful heart. It’ll elevate the conversation and the hearts of everyone.
