Faith Muscles

Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. When I was in physical therapy after my spinal-cord injury, they had me do a lot of isometric exercises. I had very weak muscles, and my physical therapist wanted me to build up my biceps. So she sat me at a table with very large, heavy objects on it. She told me to try my best to push them away from me. At first, they did not budge; but over time, my muscles strengthened – and it was a happy day when I was able to push those heavy objects away from me! It was proof I was getting stronger. I thought of that when I recently read this quote by CS Lewis. He said, “Real progress can only be measured against some resisting force.” Isn’t that the truth?! Friend, the muscle of your faith requires a pretty sturdy force of resistance in order to become strong. So don’t be dismayed. Just think of your problem today as an isometric exercise for your faith!
