Better Than Skin Deep
Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada, and not long ago, I learned about a disturbing trend in the surgical world. In England, parents of a five-year-old girl with Down syndrome put her through a series of cosmetic surgeries to “improve” her appearance – removing the folds of skin from the corners of her eyes, and “fixing” her flattened nose. Other parents have chosen similar, elective surgeries. They say they just want their children to be happy. But putting braces on their teeth is one thing. But surgeries that completely restructure a child’s face? I don’t think so. Psalm 139 says God created us exactly the way He intended. So, don’t think of a child with Down syndrome as someone whose appearance must be “fixed.” God’s got a plan and it just may mean fixing the hearts of people around that child.
