An Appalling Trial
Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada, and when my disability starts to encroach, when my quadriplegia feels like too much, and if my wheelchair is overwhelming; when the pain increases, the temptation for me is to avoid it, escape it, run from it, medicate it. That’s what I used to do. But over the years, I have learned to welcome that trial as a friend, just as those first few verses in James tells us to do. Why welcome a trial? Because it’s where your sweetest intimacy with Jesus can happen. Jesus is never more near you than when you need him in your suffering, and God’s presence in that trial is much better than trying to escape it. The Lord’s presence is never so sweet as when you are going through appallingly painful times. It’s why the Bible tells you to count it all joy when the Lord leads you into a trial. And He leads you into it so that you will find Him in a way that you never, ever dreamed. That’s good news today.
