A Wheelchair Hike

A path in the middle of the forest surrounded by evergreen trees.

Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada, and I love participating in our Joni and Friends Family Retreats. I remember one retreat when I went on a wheelchair hike with Stacy who has cerebral palsy, and she uses a power wheelchair. Together, we wheeled down long dirt road through the woods, and as we talked, we lost track of time. It got late, and so we turned around to wheel back. But halfway there, our wheelchairs ran out of battery power, and we were stuck! Not a minute later, though, a couple of Family Retreat volunteers came walking down the road enjoying their break time. They looked up, saw our predicament, and came running. And as they pushed us back to the campus, we kept singing Amazing Grace. Except I changed the words: we once were lost, but now we’re found; we were stuck, but then we got free. Hey, be a happy rescuer. Volunteer with us at a Family Retreat. Get all the details at joniandfriends.org. God bless you and thanks for listening!

Serve With Us!

At Family Retreat, families are cared for, encouraged, and rejuvenated in an accessible camp environment. The success of our Family Retreats depends largely on having enough “helping hands” to serve the special needs families who attend, and we need your help!
