Sweet Afflictions

Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada and I thought of that quote from an early church father the other night when my pain would not go away. I was hurtin’ terribly, but it made me feel so very close to Jesus. I even whispered, “Oh Jesus, I’m hurtin’ so badly but I am so happy in you. My suffering was giving me a unique oneness with Christ and His suffering. And I just I knew that bond wouldn’t be that strong if it weren’t for my afflictions. I realized then how sweet afflictions can be. When we give Jesus our vinegar, our suffering, He gives us His sweetness. When we give Him our confusion, Christ gives us clarity. So friend, know that everything you bring to Him that’s broken, He will bless. And it is what makes every hardship, at times, deliriously happy.
