God’s Sovereign Hand

“That night the king could not sleep; so he ordered the book of the chronicles, the record of his reign, to be brought in and read to him.”

Esther 6:1

One night, Xerxes, emperor of the mighty Persian Empire, couldn’t sleep. That may seem like a random, trivial fact—but it’s not. That one night of royal insomnia set off a whole chain of events that eventually saved Queen Esther and the whole Jewish population from destruction—while decimating their enemies. It’s a reminder of how God delights to use and arrange “coincidences” to advance His purposes. He uses the most innocuous, everyday events to engineer the most earth-shattering and significant moments in your life. As Pastor John Piper wrote, “God is always doing 10,000 things in your life, and you may be aware of three of them.” *

Is your heart open today? Watch for His sovereign hand at work in every life situation and praise Him for how each incident weaves its way into His marvelous plan.

Dear Lord, how inexpressibly comforting this is! To think that I can trust You with all the details of my life—right down to the frustrating delays, health setbacks, traffic jams, missed flights, and unexpected glitches. Your watch-care over my life is wonderful. Why should I be anxious or discouraged? I praise You for being Lord over all of life.
